Dr. Carlson grew up in Honolulu, HI, and then trained in ichthyology, ecology, and evolutionary biology for about ten years prior to pursuing a career in medicine. In her dissertation and postdoctoral research, she studied the morphological diversification of darters, a species rich group of North American stream fishes.
